Routine

I count every beat,
Step, tick-tock.
I tap the counter,
Uneven nails and
Click my tongue.
Routine is good,
I whisper to barely hanging lights
It’s all just routine.
Routine is what keeps us
From doing things …
Crazy … things.
Like carving
A new face
With that pretty chefs knife …
Swirling along the blade
The way my brain
Spins in time
As
I count every beat,
Step, tick-tock.
I tap the counter,
With clack of that knife handle
And click my tongue.
No, no,
This will never do …
Just not …
Routine yet
Which keeps us
From doing things …
Nasty … things.
Like stringing up
That boy …
Maybe by the groin?
And running far away …

Run

I started working on something for the daily prompt – identity but it ended up being something I really liked and wanted to work on more, so it’s not getting posted today. Here’s a piece of something else instead.

I ran so far,
I lost sight of the horizon.
The blue of the faded sky,
Blended into the black
Of an unreachable future.
And my breath formed clouds,
Of toxic beauty against,
Golden maroon sunsets.

I ran so far,
My problems didn’t have to move,
To keep up with me.
They waited patiently,
At the finish line for me to cross.
And my sweat formed black puddles,
Of deadly reflection on the ground
Against the darkness disguised as use.

Bad Influence

WordPress Daily Prompt – Deny

I knew you were bad news when mother said

“Honey, a boy like that … he’ll never deny you.”

Now we’re standing here,

Clasping hands,

Bags of money spilled at our feet.

As the brigade closes in

I let my shuddering breath out,

“We have to run.”

And from beside me the only words

I wish you’d never say …

“Babe, I’d never deny you.”

One Tradition

WordPress Daily Prompt – Traditional

I have a feeling settling on me, a changing wind.

I’m far from traditional, I’ve tended to shy from them.

But this feeling is wrecking back and forth in my stomach, churning up a new storm.

I can’t see yet where it’s coming from, I’m not sure yet if I should run.

Perhaps that’s the one tradition I can say I’ll keep …

Or maybe I’ll break this one for once and all.
