Funnel Clouds and Silence

Word dump writing attempt, prompt – WordPress Daily Prompt – Funnel

Music of choice: Artist – Balmorhea – no specific song or album, just listening to them on Spotify.

Funnel.

Funnel clouds.

I’m from tornado country.

When I was growing up it would rain all winter, cold shocking rain that pierced your skin when it hit. When spring came the rain didn’t stop, it just warmed up but brought with it heavy downpours and storms.

Try explaining tornado sirens aka repurposed air raid sirens to people who have never had to worry about them before.

Or why the yellow sky sets me on edge.

But the purpling blue cloud of a man descending on our skyline doesn’t.

People seem to forget how quiet it is …

Right before the storm.

That’s not a saying just because, it’s true.

The birds know.

Beasts know.

When that funnel hits the ground …

They’ve been telling you.

It’s the same with all disasters, earthquakes …

Almost with human made ones too.

Heartbreak.

The silence almost always precedes it.

Hits to the gut, the legs, the back …

There was always unimaginable noise

Yelling, screaming …

Then silence.

Or at least a call for it, “shut up!”

The universe begs us to be quiet.

Listen.

There will be plenty of noise when that funnel cloud hits the ground.

It sounds like a freight train, rumbling everything around.

Walls start crumbling …

When I was in school they pretended that having us sit in the hall with our heads covered and our asses in the air would protect us.

It’s ironic that it’s almost the same position you end up in when life’s noise becomes too much.

On the ground.

Hands over your head.

After all, your most precious commodity is your brain.

You can break your spine,

Lose your legs,

Never walk again.

But as long as you can still think,

As long as you can still reach for that silence.

Understand.

My 10 minutes are up.

When We Drown

The view under the waves is distorted, bending the world as we know it. It crashes, murky greens into peaceful blues with an explosion muted by the space between the Sun and me. I strain to reach, my fingers grasping for the last wispy rays of a rope I could never hope to hold. Perhaps if I try to hold them tight enough, clutched in my palm until nails bite skin, the Sun will pull me above the wake as it journeys from one horizon to another. I hold my breath but the water holds me like a lover, tight without remorse. It sighs and heaves, weaving tapestries of mystery before my eyes, tempting my lips to part as it tickles my skin.

“Drink.” It sings. “Breathe.” The siren song every fiber of my being aches to succumb to floods my ears. Water tousles my hair, roughly catching it in the fine stems of seaweed beds for two. It strokes my cheeks and surrounds every part of me with suffocating romantic intents. “Let go.” It whispers.

I cling to the Sun with weakening resolve. My hands, stained with the blood of a thousand moments, are slipping down the silken rays as the water takes me into its arms. “Just breathe.” A siren song echo in my mind. The seaweed bed pricks my skin, weaving tight through my hair, restraining my arms, pulling my legs. I have no choice, the last rays of rescue slide right through my fingers as the water pushes me violently down.

“Breathe.” It sings in a voice undeniably angelic while I watch the view under the waves, distorting the world as we know it. I have found the water is a demanding lover, a suffocating romantic with murderous intent. The seaweed grips my waist, holding me steady, while I breathe.

Crumbling Pieces

Raise your hand if you had to look this one up then couldn’t think of rhymes!

WordPress Daily Prompt – Tenterhooks

I’ve stretched my heart;
Hung it to dry.
In the fields where your bones laid;
Where the rivers ran awry.
I visit it sometimes
To collect the crumbling pieces
Littering the red mud ground.
It never seems enough, the breaking never ceases.
Yet my heart remains solid and bold
Hooked steadfast to the tenter.
The wind calls me here with a siren song;
It moves me with slow seduction, it brings me to center.

Stir My Soul

WordPress Daily Prompt – Focused

I’ve been sitting here,
Focusing, focusing,
But the rapping of the clock
Reminds me of the way you knock
When you lean on my door while
Stirring my soul with your chains.
A thick boiling concoction of self loathing
Heaving this way and that with an evil all its own
Threatening to tear holes straight through
Letting all the light bleed out.
You give it a siren song,
A melody so sweet,
I can’t help but feel at peace.
